Gastric reflux diets are an important part in reducing symptoms associated with Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. This is a very common disorder which occurs when stomach acid rises into the esophagus through the lower esophageal sphincter.

- Try to avoid large meals – Large meals will increase the possibility of excess gastric (stomach) pressure and reflux.
- You will need to decrease your total fat intake – Meals that are high in fat and fried foods tend to decrease the pressure and delay stomach emptying thereby increasing the risk of reflux.
- You might need to avoid coffee, with or without caffeine, however, it depends on your individual tolerance. Some people may be able to drink coffee without any problems.
- Avoid chocolate, it contains a substance known as methylxanthine, which has been shown to reduce the lower esophageal sphincter pressure by causing the smooth muscle to relax.
- If you need to lose weight, then reduce your total caloric intake. Obesity may promote reflux and weight loss may be recommended by your medical provider. By reducing both caloric and total fat intake, it will help in promoting weight loss.
- There are several other irritants that you may need to avoid, carbonated drinks, mint, alcohol, citrus juices, and tomato products. These will also depend on individual tolerance.
