If you have ever had the occasional heartburn, then you are like most of the world’s population. You will know when you have heartburn, you will feel that unmistakable burning sensation behind your breastbone up to your throat. You will feel the burning actually rising up from your stomach through your esophagus up to your neck. If you experience on more occasions than you would like to count, then you may not be suffering from heartburn, you may be having acid reflux symptoms.
The symptoms include that horrible burning sensation, that is when the acid will rise and actually feel like it’s burning your throat. You may experience chest pain, your voice can change or you may become hoarse. This can even cause some dental problems and difficulty in swallowing. Even though most people take this pretty lightly, it can actually be quite serious.
Acid reflux is also referred to as GERD. This stands for Gastro esophageal reflux disease. This can affect anyone, children or adults. Acid reflux symptoms in children or babies can cause them to cough, vomit, and aspirate which can cause some respiratory problems. You may also notice in the children, bad breath, spitting a lot, not wanting to eat because they hurt, which will then cause some weight loss. Some of these symptoms may show up all at once, or one here and one there. Trying to figure out if it is just simple heartburn or acid reflux can be hard to do. But if you are familiar with acid reflux symptoms, then you will be more apt to treat it correctly.
Sadly, there are approximately 35% of our precious babies that suffer from acid reflux disease in the United States alone. When you think about the birth rate as being around 8 million, in the US that is, that percentage is extremely high. Thankfully, these symptoms tend to taper offer by the time they reach their first year of age.
Some of the acid reflux symptoms can be relieved with some lifestyle changes, the first being your diet. If you find that this is aggravated more when you eat spicy foods or dairy, then these need to be avoided. These are common foods that can really aggravate acid reflux disease. Also, it really helps if you avoid alcohol and coffee. For some reason these also trigger the symptoms. When you weigh the pain and discomfort of acid reflux disease and having that daily cup of coffee, or night cap, then you may want to remember the last time you had that attack of pain.
